Scaffolding is typically formed from simple, repeating systems of tubes, joints and boards that provide a temporary safe working platform for activities such as; construction, maintenance, repair, access, inspection and so on. There is a surprising range of scaffolding types that can be used in construction and for other purposes.
Most often seen in construction projects, scaffolding structures and other constructs can be used for a variety of purposes. It is common to see scaffolding being used for repair work, to access high objects, for window cleaning tall buildings, and more. Choosing the most appropriate form of scaffold structure is an important stage in the project that you are undertaking.
The basic scaffolding types are:
Independent Scaffolding
This consists of two rows of standards with each row being joined together with ledgers. The ledgers support the transverse transoms. The scaffold is erected independent from the building but is tied to it at suitable intervals. The inner row should be set as close as is practicable to the building. A base plate is provided for each row of standards.
Supported Scaffolding
Supported scaffolds consist of one or more platforms supported by outrigger beams, brackets, poles, legs, uprights, posts, frames, or similar rigid support. Because frame scaffolds are the most common type of supported scaffold, this eTool uses the frame module to describe requirements that are common to all supported scaffolds. Requirements specific to the other scaffold types are described only in their respective modules.
Suspended Scaffolding
Suspended scaffolding are mostly used for maintenance works as painting, pointing, distempering, white washing etc. It consist of a working platform suspended from the roof or parapet walls by means of ropes, wires or chains which can be raised or lowered at any desired level.
Rolling Scaffolding
Rolling scaffolding is a similar type of construct to supported scaffolding, but rather than offering a stable base, it uses castor style wheels that enable the base to be moved. This is a useful form of scaffolding when you need to complete work over a longer distance than a single scaffolding construction would permit.
Trestle scaffolding
Trestle scaffolding are widely used for minor repairs or painting works inside the rooms. Trestle scaffolding consist of working platforms supported on movable ladders with no standards, putlogs, etc. These type of scaffolding can be easily shifted from one place to another.
Mobile Scaffolding
Also known as a mobile tower scaffold, this type of scaffold is assembled from pre-formed framing components and fitted with wheels which allow it to be rolled from one place to another. It is typically used on sites where multiple areas require access for light maintenance work, or where a traditional scaffold would have to cover too great a distance to be practical.
